Black foliage filter stacks

Black foliage

There is two ways to achieve this interesting effect that involve visible light only :

  1. Through a set of absorptive filters normally used for UV

  2. With a stack based on a specific kind of dichroic filter designed for astrophotography

The idea is simple : cutting all the wavelengths of the visible specrtum in which the foliage is reflective (green-yellow-orange) and passing the wavelengths in which the foliage absorbs visible light (blue-turquoise and deep red)

This first method is ZWB3 + QB21 on an unconverted Canon 600D. It's very simple to set up. All the images are SOOC with the contrast boosted in camera. The result is very good but it cuts so much light that you have to set your ISO at 1600 in direct sunlight.

You almost can't see any transmission if you just look at the chart :

It's just enough light to take photos during daytime but you have zero slack.

The sky is nice :

White paint is properly white, a sign that there is no UV involved :

The second method is a three filter stack based on the Omega Nebular OIII which is an astrophotography filter not dissimilar to UHC or CLS filters. I paired it with and IR cut and a cooling filter. It's much more light efficient.

  • Omega Nebular OIII

  • Heliopan "digital" IR cut filter

  • Hoya 80A cooling filter

On the grating test it looks like this :

With this stack the amount of light reaching the sensor is much more confortable you can walk around using low ISOs without any problems.
