The deep blues of the Sony DSC-F828

I originally bought the F828 because of its very special full spectrum look which tends to look blue instead of brownish-pink like most cameras.

When I got it I quickly tried a filter combination from Christoph of the Hidden Realms blog.

It's a simple two filter combination : one filter to reduce IR and only pass the longer IR wavelengths and another filter, a Lee gel, essentially a warming filter to cool the IR color.

The filters are Midopt DB850 + Lee Dirty White. It immediately turned out incredible.

The blues turned out very dark and there is plenty of room for other colors to live. It's difficult to say why it works so well on this camera.

The camera is known for having a unique RGBE sensor. The E stands for Emerald, basically a different kind of green closer to blue.

On this diagrams it is shown as cyan but in reality it is much closer to green.

This unique kind of array is probably part of the answer but I think a significant detail is that the camera is generally less sensitive to IR than others. This gives relatively more weight to visible light and keeps IR a dark blue color.

Unfortunately my F828 broke rapidly. I think it is linked with the "magnet hack" you have to use to force your camera to lift the hot mirror while using it in normal mode and not in night vision mode. The magnetic field of the magnet must have damaged something inside the camera. Now my shutter is broken. The camera works fine in video though but the files are not supported by today's video softwares.
